Crops
Agricultural land constitutes about 3,724.82 sq.
km. or 78.67% of the total land area of the Province. This constitute
the areas for agricultural (non-forest), riceland/fishpond, annual
crops, perrenial crops and grassland/pastureland. The major crops
grown are palay, corn, coconut and fruit trees.
Rice
and corn are abundant in the locality. These are considered as staple
foods of the populace. Approximately, 65% of the total population
are rice-eating people while 35% are corn-eating people. The Province
is producing sufficient volume of rice and corn more than the requirement
of its inhabitants as indicated by the reflected surpluses in (Table
5-2)
Coconut is one of the leading income producer of
the Province with a total area of 100,016 hectares which produced
about 69,802 MT in copra form in 2001. An approximated value of
about P 837 million at the average price of 12.00 per kilo in year
2002. (Table 5-1 and Table 5-3).
Rubber can be found in the two (2) municipalities
in District I and five (5) in District II with average annual increase
of less than 1%. (Table 5-1)
Banana production was increasing from 1999 to 2001.
Likewise, mango production also followed the same trend. Farmers
are now engaged in planting assorted fruit trees because of high
demand. Coffee and cacao production was decreasing while cassava
and other high valued crops are increasing. (Table 5-1)
Farmgate prices of agricultural products were observed
to be generally fluctuating. These were higher during
off or lean season and lower during harvest seasons. It was particularly
oppressive to the farmers in the light of the rising cost of living
and farming activities.
