Profile of Zamboanga del Sur

The Province of Zamboanga del Sur as a political unit, comprising of 26 municipalities and one component city, serves as an effective mechanism in the development process. It is headed by the Governor as the Chief Executive and the Vice Governor as the head of the legislative body, which is composed of 14 members, 10 males and 4 females.

As a local government unit, the Provincial Government is made up of 16 mandatory offices and 1 optional office which have respective distinct functions and responsibilities. As of January 1, 2002, its personnel complement has numbered to 714, with 295 males and 419 females. The present organizational structure of the province has conformed with the Standard Organizational Structure and Position Classification set forth by the Civil Service Commission (CSC).

The Special Bodies which are composed of the key participants from the national government agencies, local government units and members of civil society organizations include the following Councils, Boards, Committees and LGU Alliances, namely: the Provincial Development Council (PDC), Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC); Provincial School Board (PSB); Provincial Health Board (PHB); Provincial Pre-qualification, Bids and Awards Committees (PPBAC); Provincial Land Use Committee (PLUC); Provincial Project Monitoring Committee (PPMC); Provincial Steering Committee for the 5th Country Program for Children, Illana Bay Regional Alliance Council (IBRA), Salug Valley Development Council (SVDC) and the Dumanquillas-Maligay Bay Development Council (DMBDC).

The cooperation and involvement of the Civil Society Organizations (Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), Private Organizations (POs), Religious and the Business Sectors), recognized as major contributors to the provincial development efforts, has gained the province active partners in facing the development challenges. To date, the province has 59 active Civil Society Organizations.

  D. Topography Zamboanga del Sur is occupying the southern section of Zamboanga Peninsula that forms the western part of the island of Mindanao. It is located within longitude 122o13" and latitude 7o 15" North. Stretching northward from Zamboanga Sibugay in the southwest and running along the northern boundary onward to Salug Valley in the east is a mountainous county. The coastal plains are extending regularly from the south-west, then spreading into wide flat lands when reaching the coastal plains of Baganian Peninsula in Southeast.
